Thomas Carroll has enjoyed the week he's spent on the left side of Miami's defensive line so much Bryan Pata might have competition for his spot when, and if, he returns from the undisclosed knee injury he suffered last week against Duke.
Carroll, a senior who has started 23 games the past three seasons, started out his UM career working on the left side, but he was moved to the right because he's a more effective pass rusher. With Pata sidelined, the Hurricanes have called on Carroll to switch back so that Eric Moncur can remain the starter on the right side.
"With the pass rush you're kind of working at a total opposite direction than you're used to, but I've been doing well this week and I'm actually starting to like it a little bit more. I can get a good view of the ball from that side," said Carroll, who has six tackles, a recovered fumble and six quarterback pressures.
With practice done for the week, UF coach Urban Meyer figures wide receiver Jemalle Cornelius will play against LSU on Saturday, but defensive end Ray McDonald won't.
"It's a game-time decision, and I would say 40-60, probably," Meyer said of McDonald's hopes. He worked out Wednesday but sat Thursday with knee soreness. Chris Leak, Mike Degory and DeShawn Wynn are all likely to play.
Guard Matt Meinrod, who had surgery to repair a dislocated left ankle and fractured fibula, has said he hopes to heal in time for a bowl game, but Randy Oravetz isn't as optimistic.
