An estimated 150 million people in India are afflicted with arthritis of which 10 million are suffering from Rheumatoid arthritis, according to world renowned orthopaedician and MIOT Hospitals Founder P V A Mohandas.
Addressing newspersons here today in connection with the inauguration of ''Freedom of Movement'' exposition on World Arthritis Day at the hospital complex, Dr Mohandas said there were 166 types of arthritis, a degenerative disease affecting people in their prime age of between 22 and 45 years and crippled them.
He claimed MIOT was the first in the Asia-Pacific region to introduce techniques like minimally invasive computer navigated joint replacement surgery (MICNS) and high flexion knee implants which restored full movement. Several new drugs had been introduced for improved medical management of the disease.
To a question, Dr Mohandas said the new techniques which were till now available only in the US and Australia, had now been brought to India by MIOT.
MIOT Hospitals Chairman Malliga Mohandas said the exposition will cover among others medical management of arthiritis, drug complications, surgery, pain-free joint replacements, spinal disorders, MICNS and role of physiotherapy Dr Mohandas said MIOT was performing six to ten knee replacement surgeries using MICNS. The hospital was witnessing increasing number of patients from abroad. He said there were three important reasons for arthritis -- inactivity, lack of participation in sports and overweight.
