"I've asked them to conduct a homicide investigation," Light said. "It's typical when you respond to a death: it could be a homicide or a suicide. Obviously, if things don't add up, we conduct it as a homicide until it becomes clear."

Around 7:30 p.m., medical responders received a call of a self-inflicted stab wound at 25 Cottonwood Ave. in Stockett, about 17 miles southeast of Great Falls.

Deputies found Shain McTarsney inside the home with three stab wounds to the abdomen, said Cascade County Coroner Bob Edwards. The weapon was a pocketknife with a 3 1/2-inch blade.

Sheriff deputies secured the scene. Mercy Flight landed in the baseball field across from the residence and airlifted the man to Benefis East at about 8 p.m.

Around 9:20 p.m., McTarsney died from excessive internal bleeding as a result of the stab wounds while in surgery at the hospital, Edwards said.

A pathologist at the state Crime Lab in Missoula performed an autopsy on the body Tuesday. Edwards said it appears that the victim was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
