Classes are continuing as normal at the 332-pupil school in rural Anderson three weeks after officials first found the spiders in the building. More spiders were found Wednesday."She was taking out some books," Lowe said. "She did say she'd been bitten, but she didn't see what bit her."

Bite victims can have severe reactions, including sores as a big as a quarter. The toxin destroys cells and rots tissue. If left untreated, it can lead to serious infection and require plastic surgery or amputation of a limb. Bites that lead to death are rare, and some scientists suspect the spider's reputation as a killer may be exaggerated.

"There is no imminent danger to kids," said Brent Furbee, medical director of the Indiana Poison Control center. "It's very unusual for people to be bitten. Spiders don't see humans as being legitimate prey."

Roger Shockley, the district's facilities director, said the spiders were first seen during the week of Aug. 28. Employees took the arachnids to the Madison County Purdue Extension office, where experts confirmed they were brown recluses.

The area was sprayed and the school was filled with pesticide fog while students were gone for the weekend. Shockley said the school may be sprayed again this weekend.
