P.J. Hill conjured up memories of former Badgers running back Ron Dayne for the second straight week, bouncing off defenders on his way to 101 yards and three touchdowns as Wisconsin beat Division I-AA Western Illinois 34-10 on Saturday.
Wisconsin senior quarterback John Stocco was 15-for-25 for 227 yards, but got up gingerly after throwing a touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter.
Stocco, who had knee surgery in August but was a surprise starter in the Badgers' season-opening victory over Bowling Green last Saturday, did not return to the game.
But Hill's powerful runs allowed the Badgers to grind out two touchdown drives of more than seven minutes in the first half. Hill had 16 carries for 85 yards and two touchdowns before halftime.
CHARLESTON, Ill. (AP) - Micah Rucker caught six passes for 183 yards and two touchdowns Saturday to lead Eastern Illinois to a 31-21 victory over Indiana State.
Quarterback Mike Donato, who was 12-of-18 for 250 yards, marched the Panthers 71 yards in a drive capped with a 15-yard touchdown run by Vincent Webb to make the score 10-9. A 7-yard run by Norris Smith gave Eastern Illinois a 17-9 lead that was increased to 24-9 when Donato connected on a 62-yard touchdown pass to Rucker.
DEKALB, Ill. (AP) - Quarterback Austen Everson threw for 322 yards and three touchdowns Saturday to lead Ohio to a 35-23 victory over Northern Illinois.
Everson, who was 23-of-31, had the most yards for an Ohio quarterback since 1986. He connected on scoring plays of 63 yards to William Norwood, 16 yards to Rudy Sylvan and 58 yards to halfback Kalvin McRae.
Northern Illinois coach Joe Novak later said it was hard to distinguish between the performance put on by Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith, frequently mentioned as a Heisman Trophy candidate, and that of Everson. The Huskies (0-2) dropped their season opener at Ohio State, surrendering as many points to the Buckeyes as they did to the Bobcats.
NORMAL, Ill. (AP) - Pierre Rambert rushed for 139 yards and Kevin Mazur kicked four field goals to lead Illinois State to an 18-3 win over Central Arkansas on Saturday night.
Illinois State's defense also did its part, limiting Central Arkansas to just nine first downs. The Redbirds (1-1) limited Central Arkansas (1-1) to 63 yards on the ground and intercepted two passes by Robbie Park, who completed 18 of 34 for 256 yards.
For the Redbirds, quarterback Luke Drone was 16-of-38 for 228 yards. He threw a 61-yard touchdown pass to Jake Rourke. Pierre Jackson caught nine passes for 113 yards for Illinois State.
