said she lived about a mile from the parking lot where she was found. A woman taking out garbage at a nearby apartment saw flames "six to 10 feet" high and called firefighters.

Investigators are looking for links between Friday's attack and one in June 2004 when a 33-year-old woman was beaten to death before being dumped and set on fire in Oakland's Rose Garden on Jean Street.

It took police almost a year to identify that victim and they were never able to determine where or why she was killed. No one was ever arrested.

Neighbors, shocked at the most recent crime, said the site where the woman was found is often used by prostitutes and drug dealers, and that police are called often. Parents and teachers at the Park Day School were also alarmed by the crime.

Residents set up a street shrine where the crime occurred, but Park Day School officials sent a letter to neighbors asking that they not leave things in the area during the day to avoid upsetting the children.
