New techniques for breast cancer care THE Conquest's breast team will soon be trained in a procedure that could improve the surgical management of breast cancer patients. And Hastings resident Lisa Bonham, together with a team of dedicated people, has raised £1,066 to help them along their way.

Pam Shadbolt, Macmillan breast care nurse, said: "We hugely appreciate what Lisa has done for us and it's great that she thought of us when raising this money.

In September, breast care staff will be starting the training programme in the sentinel node biopsy technique which is already used in some other hospitals.

Elizabeth Shah, consultant breast surgeon, said this surgery had fewer side effects than standard surgery, but the team had to be first put through a rigorous training programme before they could undertake the procedure on a day to day basis.

Pam said: "It means that women spend less time in theatre and there is much less discomfort following the operation because the area under the arm can be quite sore after the auxillary nodes are removed.

Eight members of the team will start the training course in September which consists of one theory day and thereafter in-house supervised training until they complete the course.

Pam and Macmillan breast care nurse Frances Scott also recently raised £300 for Macmillan and Help a Local Child after doing a sponsored abseil.
