"Audra was definitely the first person I thought of calling," McVeigh said. "I remember when I played her. She had a really good serve and all-around game. She seemed like she'd be a good doubles partner."
Playing together for the first time, McVeigh and Cohen lost 8-1 in their wild card match against the Russian-Romanian team of Anastassia Rodionova/Andrea Vanc, played in an eight-game, pro-set format.
Despite the defeat, Cohen and McVeigh were happy to have played together. They exchanged low-fives after almost every point, win or lose. They turned their heads away from the net to discuss strategy like a pitcher and catcher meeting on the mound. They enjoyed the camaraderie.
"It was definitely different than the junior tournaments I play in," McVeigh said. "I almost got taken out by a 150 mph forehand that was right at my face. I did a quick little dodge."
Cohen, who will be a junior at Miami, was the top seed this year in the NCAA Division I singles tournament, but lost in the round of 16. In June, she was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national women's player of the year.
